First weather blog, and an update about the week

 Hey everybody,

I've decided to start running a weather blog covering the Seattle area, and occasionally weather-related news stories that reach outside Washington State.

I have no idea in the world how frequent I am going to post, but my goal to begin with is weekly or a couple times a week.

Now there is so many past-weather related blogs I want to create as well as present weather. I definitely will have certain blogs that discuss past events and why/how they happened.

My favorite type of Seattle weather, this one could be controversial, but I love it when it's June but it's cold and raining like it's April. The famous "June Gloom" has a special place in my heart. I love it. Not a big fan when it's cloudy in December though lol.

I will briefly talk about some of the background of the weather here in the past year, and then talk about the week ahead.

This year, 2022, has been nothing short of weird. Obviously our spring was heavily influenced by the La Nina pattern, which has meant cooler than normal water conditions over the eastern pacific, and a stubborn mass of low pressure was parked off our shore, giving us wintry precipitation without mercy. Before the astronomical start of summer (June 21), there was only an hour or two above 75 degrees in Seattle. And rainfall was impressive to say the least. My lawn was incredibly green until after the 4th of July, it was a typical late-start La Nina summer here. But then in mid-July, the switch flipped, and warm, sunny, dry conditions prevailed, more so than even a normal summer. Sure, it was hot, especially that last week of July that was in the 90s, but still nothing record-worthy besides the longevity of the heat wave. But what was really concerning was our quiet radar throughout the first half of meteorological fall. Between September 1 and October 15th, we got only a quarter of an inch of rain. This, combined with extended warmth well into October, caused us to have a late beginning to fall, and as of now, a week before Halloween, the leaves are still on the trees and the grass is still brown. And the smoke. It was bad, but imagine how much worse it could've been if spring wasn't the way it was.

It has been a weird year, all in all.

But things look very seasonably mid-fall-like this week with plenty of rain (nearly every day!) and high temperatures wherever in the 50s across the board. Overnight lows will bounce around either side of 45. Beautiful for how October should be, not more summer! Now the fall air is finally here, and in my opinion, that increases the enjoyability of fall. Not everyone thinks so, some loved our California-like start to October, I certainly enjoyed it as a one-time occasion but not again for a while please.

Now let's talk about the rainfall.

DARK red for the Pacific northwest. 100-300 millimeters is about anywhere between 4 and 10 inches! This is over the next 10 days. I can say with certainty the higher end of that estimation is more likely on the western slopes of the Cascades, but the Puget Sound Lowlands are still expected to get hammered regardless, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a period of heavy rain somewhere in there.

Those lawns will be green by the end of the week, maybe next.

If you're a fan of sunshine and warm temperatures, sorry. You had plenty of extra time this autumn. I for one appreciated that warmth, but being the rain enthusiast I am, I am so happy to see the radar models light up in flashy colors again. Also makes for more to talk about. If you love the rain and cold temperatures like I do, get ready to see a lot more. I'm all for heat and sun when it's appropriate, like in the summer, but this hasn't even been good weather to enjoy, the smoke has ruined it.

And the 87 degree day we saw two Sundays ago... just unbelievable for how late into fall it was. I was at the Seahawks game at Lumen Field, and they were playing Arizona. I think the highs for both of those cities were roughly the same. Regardless, being at a seahawks game in that heat in WEEK 6 didn't feel right at all. Even our Week 1 and 2 games RARELY get that hot.

Tomorrow I expect showers most, if not all day during the daylight hours. Rainfall will be plentiful, but not insane as we should get about a half-inch in the next 24 hours. Highs in the low-mid 50s and lows in the mid 40s.

Wednesday's temperatures are roughly the same, and should be fairly dry, with a possibility of a few hundredths of an inch.

Thursday will be our warmest day, with highs making it into the upper 50s, and rain returns.

Friday will be mid-50s and rain, and it looks like rain across the board through next Wednesday.

Have a good night!
-Connor
